Stephen McNeff Recording
Stephen McNeff is Composer in the
House with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and a noted composer
of opera and theatre music. His opera Tarka the Otter, for mixed
cast of professionals and non-professionals, won the
2007 British Composer Award in the
stage works category. I'm looking forward to recording his major wind
orchestra pieces later this month. The disc should be out later in the
year on the Campion label.
Nottingham Philharmonic Review
The latest concert in the NPO's season featured the CBSO's fabulous
principal horn, Elspeth Dutch, as soloist in the 1st horn concerto by
Richard Strauss. The Nottingham Evening Post commented:
"This orchestra is one of the
city's best kept secrets. Their skills, dedication and responsiveness to
young music director Mark Heron made Sibelius' Second Symphony a
thrilling experience.
The evening opened with an absorbing account of Brahms' tuneful St
Anthony Variations. Guest soloist Elspeth Dutch won an ovation for her
exquisite playing in Richard Strauss' "Waldhorn" Concerto.
And the Finnish symphonist's home thoughts from abroad concluded by raising the
roof."
The
orchestra's next concert is on Saturday 10th May with a programme
featuring percussion. Marimba virtuoso Simone Rebello will play
Rosauro's 1st marimba concerto and the orchestra's own percussion
section get a workout in Hindemith's Symphonic Metamorphoses
and the famous "timpani battle" at the conclusion of Nielsen's 4th
Symphony.
Ticket details.
Simone will also lead a workshop for percussionists
in the afternoon of the concert. Please contact the
orchestra directly for details of this.
Conducting Courses
In addition to teaching at the RNCM,
University of Manchester and the Royal Air Force, I am teaching
two external conducting courses later this year. The first is a weekend
event at the Royal Northern College of Music with my colleague
Baldur Bronnimann. The dates are
2nd to 4th May and the course is full but you could email the
course administrator in case there are any last minute vacancies.
This course is aimed at a wide range of experience and availability:
music students and orchestral players looking to get into conducting,
those working in education, conductors of amateur orchestras and
ensembles and others with a general interest.
Later in the year I'll be
back at Canford Summer School, teaching the Wind Conducting course
alongside
Tim Reynish. You can find information
about that course and how to apply
here.
