Private Teaching

Schedules permitting, I take a small number of private students. Typically these are ambitious young conductors studying at undergraduate level in universities or conservatoires, other than the RNCM or Manchester University.

The format of these lessons varies from student to student, depending on the stage they are at and how much conducting they are actually doing. Ideally it will involve watching videos of the student in rehearsal and performance as well as discussions of scores they might be preparing and maybe even a bit of fresh air conducting.

If your finances permit, I can arrange professional level rehearsal pianists to work with you and I. An hour of this kind of session is probably worth 3 one to one lessons.

I profess to not being very good at teaching just for the sake of my bank balance, and I do think it is of fairly limited value to take conducting lessons if you are not actually conducting, or have an upcoming audition or course to work towards. Much better that you apply to come on a course I am teaching so that we can meet in an environment where you will be doing some conducting, and take it from there.

If meeting face to face is not possible, a increasingly effective option is conducting lessons via distance-learning! You can send me a dvd or better still a video file online and I can add a commentary over the file and send it back to you. Easy!
